Removals to the UK: how customs works, and the documents to expect
Removals to the UK from Europe begin with HMRC, not with a van: you apply for transfer of residence relief before you ship, and it decides how your belongings clear. Customs clearance is included in every quote, the export declaration lodged where you leave and the import managed on the way in. Paris to London, our recorded example, is 6 hours of driving, so every range starts at day 1 and a vehicle of your own has a range of 1–3 days.
Customs clearance is included in every quote on removals to the UK.

The documents for removals to the UK
The UK's VAT and duty relief for bringing your household goods home. The approved ToR carries a URN number from HMRC. It’s part of your document pack: we tell you what it is and how to apply, and approval takes 2 to 6 weeks, so it’s the first thing we check.
Evidence you're leaving one home and setting up another: utility bills, tax bills or a rental agreement in your name in the country you’re leaving, and its equivalent in the UK.
What each document is, how the two stages run after your quote, what stands in when you start out with family, and what happens if customs asks for more: all on how customs clearance works.

The UK's Transfer of Residence relief: it lets household goods enter the UK without VAT and duty. The approved ToR carries a URN number, and the application is part of your pack.
Coming into the UK on a change of residence, household goods are normally declared under relief, the claim your pack's declaration makes; HMRC is the authority with the final call, and we handle it with you.
Into the UK, HMRC's pack is due 7 days ahead of the collection window and the finalised inventory 3 calendar days ahead of it; your booking confirmation lists both dates.

Removals to the UK, in facts
Removals to the UK have the same document logic from every country, but weight allowances depend on the country you’re leaving. The figures below are for France to the UK; your quote confirms them for your exact route.
* 5–10m³ travels consolidated with other moves, so its range is widest.
From Paris to London every size runs, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³, the largest at 2,400 kg, and the drive is short enough that each range starts at day 1: the Channel crossing counts as the driver's rest, not as driving, so it adds nothing. Those are the figures for France. Leave from further away and the first day of your range moves later; leave from a country with a smaller matrix and the route offers fewer sizes, with lower caps. Your quote resolves all of it from your two addresses.

The document logic is the same: ToR relief and proof of residence at both ends. The weight allowance depends on the country you’re leaving, so your quote confirms the figures for your exact route.
Planning removals to the UK from Europe
Most removals to the UK start with a form, not a van. Transfer of residence relief is HMRC’s, and it decides whether your own belongings cross without import VAT and duty. So it is the first thing we check with you, and the first thing to put in motion. Here is the order of events for a household move into the UK. It says who does each step, and what the UK end looks like when the van arrives.
Apply for the relief before you book removals to the UK
HMRC asks you to apply for transfer of residence relief before you ship your goods. The approval comes back as a unique reference number, the URN. Without a valid URN on the import declaration, HMRC warns, import duties and an administration charge can follow. The tests are HMRC’s too: a year living outside the UK, six months of owning the goods, and arrival within twelve months of moving. Our guide to the ToR1 form covers the form itself, how long approvals took on our own moves, and your three choices if the URN is late. This page does not repeat them.
What the relief changes for your booking is the path your belongings take through customs. With the URN on file, we instruct the relief pack: your passport, the URN, and residence evidence at both ends. Then we lodge the export declaration in the country you are leaving. We manage the import clearance into the UK, as on every cross-border move. You can book before the URN arrives. People often ask whether that is allowed. They also ask whether a late approval would add a fifth of the value of their goods to the bill. The answer is that the relief route needs the URN before we load. Without it, HMRC charges the standard rate of UK VAT, 20%, plus any duty, on your goods; you can reclaim it once HMRC approves the relief, and it is never a line in our price.
The application itself wants two dated proofs. One is evidence of your address outside the UK, dated within the last six months. The other is evidence of the UK address, dated within the last three months, where you have one. How customs clearance works explains the two stages after your quote.
HMRC’s part once the van is on its way
The customs step on removals to the UK happens at the port, and you are not there for it. Before the vehicle boards on the French side, the haulier presents a goods movement reference. HMRC’s Goods Vehicle Movement Service issues it to cover everything on the vehicle, your consignment among it. The carrier lets the vehicle embark only when that reference is valid. On arrival through Dover or the tunnel, HMRC may call the vehicle to an inland border facility for an inspection, at Sevington near Ashford. A driver with that instruction must attend. Customs officers there compare the load with the declaration. That is why your finalised inventory matters as much as the URN: it is the list customs reads.
Two details of the system are worth knowing. The reference covers commercial movements, and a removal van is one. HMRC’s exception for personal goods applies only to what you carry in your own baggage. So your consignment travels under the haulier’s reference, not under you. And an instruction at the border is not optional: HMRC can fine a movement that ignores one up to £2,500, which is why the driver goes where the service sends them.
Here is what that means for you, in order. First, we lodge the export declaration where you are leaving. Then we manage the import clearance into the UK under your relief. Next, the vehicle crosses, and an inspection, if HMRC calls one, happens inland before delivery. Finally, your things arrive at your door. The quiet stretch is the clearance, and the thread tells you which stage you are at; ask whenever you like.
The crossing inbound, and the UK end
Two crossings carry nearly every removal to the UK from the continent. LeShuttle times the tunnel at 35 minutes between Calais and Folkestone, and DFDS times the Dover ferry at an hour and forty minutes. Neither adds to your delivery range, because a crossing counts as the driver’s rest under our transfer-time rule, not as driving. That is why Paris to London, 6 hours of driving, puts a vehicle of your own at 1–3 days. The shared sizes, 5 and 10 m³, sit at 1–8 days, the wider range being the wait to share a vehicle with other loads. Both crossings run often enough that a missed slot costs an hour, not a day: DFDS lists up to 30 sailings a day on the Dover route, and LeShuttle up to six freight departures an hour.
At the UK end, the delivery is ours to run. In London, our own crew, directly employed by MuveOne, unloads at the van. Elsewhere in the UK, a partnership company does the same. A delivery to Durham is as door to door as one to Hackney. Once Logistics confirm your van, we email you the driver’s name and the vehicle registration. The day before loading you get a precise time. On the day, the driver helps at the vehicle: in and out of the van is part of the price, and the carry indoors is yours, or additional crew by arrangement.
Two UK errands can wait until the boxes are in. Registering with a GP surgery in England is free and needs no ID, proof of address or immigration status, the NHS says. Council tax follows the home’s valuation band and your council’s charge for that band. The bill depends on the address, not on how you arrived.
Arriving home, or arriving new
Two kinds of people book removals to the UK: the one coming home after years abroad, and the one arriving for the first time. The relief does not care which, as long as you meet the year abroad and the six months of ownership. What differs is the proof. Someone coming home may still have a UK address to return to. A new arrival often has a visa in progress and no tenancy signed, and HMRC’s application allows for that: it accepts a statement from the person you will stay with, or evidence of temporary accommodation. Approval does not force everything onto one van, either: HMRC lets the goods arrive in more than one consignment inside the twelve months. The rest of a home can follow once there is a room for it.
One more thing in HMRC’s guidance surprises people: you can add to an application after sending it, but you cannot change it. So check the UK address before you press send, and if you have no address yet, apply anyway. Someone bringing a parent’s estate rather than a home is on another route altogether: inheritance to the UK has its own documents and no relief application.
Northern Ireland is the exception on the map. HMRC says a move from the EU to Northern Ireland needs no transfer of residence application, because of freedom of movement; the goods still travel, and the inventory deadline still stands.
Whichever you are, the stakes are the same. A van that crosses with the URN on file and a list that matches its load clears quietly. The customers who worry most before they book are usually the ones who have not yet seen that order written down. Now you have.
Removals from France to the UK, from Spain to the UK, and the rest of Europe
The document logic above is the same from every country, and we handle the export side in each. What changes is the road and the weight matrix. France is the example throughout this page because it is the shortest drive we record into the UK. From Spain or further south the driving takes more than one day, so the ranges start later. Your quote works it out from your two exact addresses. Which sizes a route offers, and the cap on each, also follow the country you leave.
Students moving from France are a case of their own, with their own document set. Moving as a student from France is their page. HMRC treats a student differently again: someone coming for full-time study does not complete a ToR1 at all. They declare under a customs procedure code instead, which is one reason that page exists. The relief is for people, not companies: HMRC’s words are that only living persons and their personal property qualify. The goods must also go on serving the purpose they served before. Alcohol and tobacco never qualify for the relief, and it never replaces a licence for restricted goods such as firearms. Some things cannot go on the van at all: what we can’t move lists them in full.
