Packed boxes stacked in the back of a small van. How much does furniture weigh? That, not the room it takes, decides what fits.

How much does a sofa weigh? Weight decides what fits

How much does a sofa weigh? More than most people guess. Weight, not the room it takes, decides what fits on your route.

People plan a move in cubic metres: will it fit in the van? Fair enough, that is the visible question. But your load crosses borders by weight, and weight is where the surprises live. The limit is not one number. It changes with the route.

How much does a sofa weigh?

In our inventory catalogue a two-seat sofa typically weighs about 58 kg, a three-seat sofa about 95 kg and a corner sofa about 123 kg. So one sofa can weigh as much as a whole stack of boxes. And it is only the first thing out of the living room.

Ask how much furniture weighs in general and there is no single answer. A box of books and a box of duvets take the same space in the van, but they weigh nothing alike. That is why the question "how much does a sofa weigh" matters more than "how big is it". The van has room for the sofa long before it has the weight to spare.

The rule nobody expects

Every country we serve sets its own weight cap for each load size, and the caps genuinely differ from country to country. On any route, the cap that applies is the lower of the two. The origin country allows one figure and the destination country another, and the lower one wins. So a size is only offered on a route at all when both ends allow it.

That is why we publish no single weight figure for a route in this guide. It is also why you should distrust any general answer to "how much can I take". Whatever number we typed here would be wrong for most routes. Your route has its own figures, published on its own page and confirmed on your quote.

Where it bites: how much does furniture weigh?

Volume and weight disagree most in dense loads: books, tools, records, crockery, a workshop. A load can fit its size tier with room to spare and still sit over that tier's weight cap for the route. The reverse is also true. Bulky, light loads almost never touch the limit.

If you are packing yourself, the estimate is yours. An undeclared overweight load has real consequences at the roadside. In Britain, an overloaded van gets an immediate prohibition and does not move until the extra weight is off it. We tell that story once, in full, on our packing guide, and it is worth the two minutes. How much can a 3.5 tonne van carry? Our guide does the same sum for the van itself.

What to actually do

Look up your route's page for its own limits. Then get your quote, so the figures are confirmed for your exact addresses. If your load is on the dense side, say so when we talk. Weighing a doubt before loading day is free. Discovering it after is not a conversation anyone enjoys.
