Removals to Switzerland from the UK: a mountain lake at sunrise

Removals to Switzerland from the UK

MuveOne’s removals from the UK to Switzerland are door to door across a customs border that sits inside Europe, and clearance at that border is included in every quote. We record London to Zurich at 10.4 driving hours, so every range starts at day 2: a vehicle of your own is quoted at 2–4 days, a shared 5 m³ load at 2–9 days. The usual papers for removals to Switzerland are on this page, and we confirm yours after your quote.

This route crosses a customs border even though it's within Europe: clearance applies, and it's included in your quote.

YOUR DOCUMENTS, INSTRUCTED

The documents for removals to Switzerland

YOUR DOCUMENT PACK
UK → SWITZERLAND
The usual pack for a change of residence. We confirm yours after your quote.

For every move

  • Your passport Clear and in date; a copy is enough.
  • Insurance / Inventory List The final list, 3 calendar days ahead of your window at the latest.
  • Customs Form 18.44 FORM 18.44 Two copies, each signed by hand, because the office refuses a photocopy. Both go to the driver on loading day.

Your UK home

  • Proof of residency in the UK Council tax bills for the last full tax year; where there is no council tax history, 12 months of bank statements take their place.
  • Proof of end of residence The notice ending your rental, or the sale agreement. A home you keep and let: the signed tenancy agreement, plus any letting agent's agreement.
  • Employment termination papers P45 or similar from your last job, if available.

Your home in Switzerland

These back up the form, and one of them comes after you arrive.

  • Rental agreement Bought rather than rented? The deed or purchase papers.
  • Employment contract If you have one.
  • Swiss residence permit On a UK passport, the permit or the assurance of it goes in the file.
  • Registration certificate Your commune issues this only after you move in. The other papers here carry the case until then.

Customs authorities can ask for more. How the clearance then runs is on our transfer of residence page.

Questions people ask about UK to Switzerland removals

"What is Form 18.44?"

Switzerland's declaration form for moving household goods in. We send you the form and tell you how to complete it; the two signed hard copies travel with your driver.

"Can I go ahead without paying VAT?"

Household goods moved as part of relocating are typically declared under relief from VAT and duty; your pack's declaration claims it. The final call is the authority's, and we manage it with you.

"When do we need these ready?"

The pack for the Swiss border is due 7 days ahead of your collection window, the inventory, finalised, 3 calendar days ahead. Both dates sit on your booking confirmation.

PUBLISHED, NOT ON REQUEST

Removals from the UK to Switzerland, in facts

Every corridor we serve has its own facts: customs pack, transfer-time range, weight limits. We publish them rather than making you ask. These are confirmed for removals from the UK to Switzerland, because allowances differ by country.

SIZESIZE COLLECTION WINDOWWINDOW WEIGHT ALLOWANCEWEIGHT DELIVERY RANGEDELIVERY
5m³ 4-day window4-day window 300 kg 2–9 days · travels consolidated*
10m³ 3-day window3-day window 600 kg 2–9 days · travels consolidated*
15m³ 2-day window2-day window 800 kg 2–6 days
30m³ Confirmed dayConfirmed day 1,600 kg 2–4 days

* 5–10m³ travels consolidated with other moves, so its range is widest.

Switzerland is a third country for customs, so the lorry clears at a Swiss customs office on the way in, and the matrix is its own: 5, 10, 15 and 30 m³, no 20 m³, with the 15 m³ at 800 kg and the 30 m³ at 1,600 kg, the lowest allowances we publish. At 10.4 recorded driving hours from London, Zurich is close enough that the ranges begin at day 2 but never day 1; the shared 5 and 10 m³ loads run to day 9. The Channel crossing is the driver’s rest and adds no day.

PLANNING THE MOVE

Planning your removals to Switzerland: the border, the form and the week

Removals to Switzerland cross a customs border inside Europe

Switzerland is not in the EU. A lorry from London therefore reaches a real customs border on the way to Zurich, Basel, Bern or Geneva. The export declaration goes in on the UK side. The import is declared at a Swiss customs office that handles commercial goods, and on our route that office is at Basel, where the motorway from Germany enters the country. The export side is ours too. The UK declaration goes in before the ferry, so the file is complete when the lorry reaches Basel. Your goods travel the whole way under goods-in-transit cover of up to £20,275 per event.

Two things follow for your plan. First, Swiss customs decides at that office whether your furniture comes in free of duty and tax as removal goods, on the conditions below. We put the case to them rather than promise its outcome.

Second, the office works office hours. The Swiss form itself says removal goods are assessed on working days only, in the hours set for commercial goods. So a lorry cannot clear on a Saturday morning or a Sunday. We plan the loading day so the vehicle meets the office open, and we price the range with that in mind. The customs information office that answers questions about the rules keeps the same weekday pattern: a morning and an afternoon session, Monday to Friday.

Form 18.44 and the six-month rule

The relief rests on one declaration, Swiss customs form 18.44. It is for people transferring their domicile into Switzerland, and the conditions printed on it are short. The goods must have been in your personal use abroad for at least six months, and they stay in your use after the move.

They arrive within two years of the date you moved. You list them, and anything that does not meet the test goes at the foot of the list as dutiable. A non-EU arrival also shows the Swiss residence paper, and the office may ask for the lease, the work contract or the confirmation that you registered in your commune.

The form carries your original signature, twice: the customs office wants it in duplicate and refuses a photocopy. You will not be standing at the border when the lorry arrives. So you give both signed copies to our driver on loading day, and the driver presents them with the file. We send you the form, tell you how to complete it, and check it against your pack before the 7-day documents deadline; the finalised inventory follows 3 calendar days before your window. The two stages that follow, the UK export and the Swiss import, are set out on our transfer of residence page.

Work permits before the move: what the UK passport changes

A British passport is a third-country passport in Switzerland now, and that sets the order of the move. Switzerland admits third-country workers only when they are highly qualified, as managers, specialists or skilled professionals. Your future employer must show that nobody suitable could be found in Switzerland, on pay and terms customary for the region and the trade. The Federal Council caps these permits with annual quotas, left unchanged for 2026. The permit comes before the work, and the employer starts the application with the canton.

So the permit date is the move date, and we would rather hold a collection window for it than collect early. The permit, or the assurance of it, doubles as the residence paper that form 18.44 asks a non-EU arrival to show. That is why the two timelines belong together.

Fourteen days to register, and why the certificate comes after the lease

Switzerland asks you to register with your new commune within fourteen days of arriving, and before you start work. The cantonal migration office issues the residence permit that follows. People moving on this lane often worry that the registration certificate in our pack cannot exist yet. The commune will not issue it until you have moved in. That is normal. The lease, the work contract and your residence paper carry the case until the certificate is in hand. We tell you which of them the office is likely to want for your situation.

Two situations come up often enough to name. A Swiss citizen coming home counts as an arrival for the relief, and the form says so in terms. Someone who kept a Swiss domicile but lived abroad for at least a year counts the same as a newcomer. That is why the office asks whether you gave up your Swiss residence before you left. And a UK passport-holder is a non-EU arrival for the form, so the residence permit, or the assurance of it, belongs in the file where an EU neighbour’s would not.

So the sequence that works is to arrive first and register within the fortnight, then take delivery. A collection window can be set so the lorry reaches Basel after your appointment rather than before it. Where the gap is longer, we can hold the goods on the UK side through our removals and storage service, by arrangement, when space allows. The form allows for a hitch too. Where something blocks the import, a flat that falls through or a permit that arrives late, the relief survives. It can still be granted once the obstacle is gone, within three months of it clearing.

Household provisions, follow-on loads and the preliminary check

The Swiss form is specific about what counts as removal goods. Household provisions and tobacco in usual quantities count as removal goods. So does alcohol within limits: up to 200 litres at 25 per cent or less, and up to 12 litres above that.

A cellar beyond those figures pays duty in the ordinary way. None of it goes on our van, because we do not carry food, tobacco or alcohol: what you bring, you bring yourself. You may send a follow-on load, but you declare it at the first import and bring it within the same two years. The form also covers the second home. That covers furniture for a house or flat you buy or rent in Switzerland for your own use. Your domicile may stay abroad; the six-month test is the same. It must arrive around the time of the purchase or the lease.

Swiss customs also offers a preliminary examination of the file. Sent to the office at least two working days ahead, it lets the officer read the form and the list before the lorry arrives. Clearance on the day is then a check rather than a reading. We use it where the file is unusual. One obligation follows you past the border: basic health insurance is compulsory for every resident and must be taken out within three months of arrival, with cover running from the day you arrived.

The week, the Sundays and the Swiss motorway

The Swiss roads close to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes every night from ten until five, and all day on Sundays. So our vehicle does not drive the last leg overnight or on a Sunday, whatever the hurry. The same weight class pays Switzerland’s heavy vehicle charge by the kilometre driven; it is the carrier’s cost, inside your price.

The route we record from London to Zurich takes 10.4 hours at the wheel, which puts day 2 as the earliest any range here begins. Your own vehicle delivers within 2–4 days and the 15 m³ within 2–6 days. A shared 5 m³ load delivers within 2–9 days, the wider figure coming from the other moves it travels with. The collection window depends on the size. A 10 m³ part-load gives a 3-day window, because the lorry gathers other loads around it, and the 15 m³ a 2-day window. You are packed and ready from the first of those days.

We tell you the arrival time the day before loading. The thread below shows what an honest estimate on this lane looks like when the ferry, UK customs and Basel all sit between loading and your door.

What UK to Switzerland removals weigh and cost

Removals to Switzerland carry the lowest weight allowances we publish, and it is better to know that first. Fifteen cubic metres may weigh no more than 800 kg here, the 30 m³ no more than 1,600 kg, and there is no 20 m³ between them. Only our Norway lane shares these allowances; every EU lane carries more. We check those limits at loading. A flat with a lot of books reaches 800 kg before the van looks full. So send a rough list or photos before you book and we will tell you which size you are in. Outgrowing it later costs only the locked step to the bigger size.

We last read our quote tool on 13 October 2026. London to Zurich came out at £1,490 at 10 m³ and £3,103 for a 30 m³ vehicle of your own.

You fix the price at booking with a 25% deposit, settle the balance when the vehicle loads, and nothing changes at the border. Swiss VAT or duty can arrive separately if customs decides the relief does not apply, for instance where the move happened more than two years ago. That is the office’s charge, not ours. The additional-crew add-on sits outside the price for the same reason: the quoted figure is van-side, and our fixed price removals page lists the few charges that can ever be added.
