Moving to Bulgaria from the UK: the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia

Moving to Bulgaria: how customs works, and the documents to expect

Moving to Bulgaria from the UK? Our tool records 24.9 driving hours from London to Sofia, which makes day 3 the earliest delivery on any size, 3–5 days the range for a vehicle of your own and 3–10 days for a part load. Customs clearance is included in every quote, and it still applies now that Bulgaria is in Schengen: the border check went, the customs declaration on goods from the UK did not.

Customs clearance is included in every quote when you’re moving to Bulgaria from the UK.

Moving to Bulgaria from the UK, in facts

Every corridor we serve has its own facts: customs pack, transfer-time range, weight limits. We publish them rather than making you ask. These are confirmed for moving to Bulgaria from the UK, because allowances differ by country.

Sofia is a day 3 delivery at the earliest on every tier, and our matrix carries 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³ here with the 30 m³ held at 2,400 kg. The van reaches the country over one of two Danube bridges from Romania, and from the bridge Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna lie in different directions, so the city on your quote moves the hours. Bulgaria prices in euro since January 2026; your quote is in pounds and does not move with the exchange rate.

PLANNING THE MOVE

Planning your removals to Bulgaria from the UK

Two things changed in Bulgaria in twelve months, and both reach a mover. On 1 January 2025 the Schengen area took in its land borders; on 1 January 2026 it adopted the euro. Neither changed customs on a household arriving from the UK, and that misunderstanding is the most common one on this lane. Guides to Bulgarian customs talk of a permission from the head of the office for your district, but that route is not yours: on this lane the goods are declared in France, long before they reach the Danube. So this section starts with the border, then takes the proof of a home, the scooter question, the Danube crossings, and the money.

Schengen did not end customs: what changed on 1 January 2025 and what did not

The European Commission records Bulgaria and Romania as the last two countries to join the Schengen area, on 1 January 2025. That lifted checks on persons at the land borders: the van crossing the Danube from Romania no longer waits at a passport control. It did nothing to customs, because customs is about the goods, not the person. Your belongings leave the UK, which is outside the EU, so they are third-country goods and need an import clearance wherever the van first enters the Union. That clearance is included in your quote, and the two deadlines above exist because of it.

The clearance itself follows the EU’s relief for a transfer of residence, in Regulation 1186/2009, and French customs is the office that applies it: at least twelve months’ residence outside the EU, goods owned and used for six months, and entry within twelve months of settling, in one lot or several. Anything sold, lent, pledged or hired out in the twelve months after loses the relief, and duty falls due on it. The Chamber of Commerce sets out Bulgaria’s procedure for someone declaring there: a permission from the head of the customs office for the district you will live in, and the regional directorate’s leave if force majeure delays the move. Neither is yours to ask for, because your goods are declared at the French end of the trip.

Drive a car there if you wish, but it goes without us: we do not carry cars. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, at a fixed rate of 1.95583 lev, so prices on the ground are now in euro; your quote is in pounds and locks when you book.

Proof of a home on removals to Bulgaria: staying with family, or a house already yours

The thread below shows the first case: a couple staying with parents in Sofia until their own flat is ready, with nothing yet in their name. The host, not you, supplies the proof in that case: their own passport copy, a bill or title in their name for the property, and a signed note that they are housing you. The second case is the mirror of it, and just as common here. You already hold Bulgarian residence and own a house, and every paper that shows it is filed in Bulgaria, not in Britain. The same rule covers both cases.

Proof of residence at both ends is on this page’s list of papers, and so is the Non-Cession Certificate. After your quote we set out the exact pack for your case, due 7 days before your window. The transfer of residence page sets out each document and what stands in for it.

Residence for a UK national runs through two ministries: visas and extensions through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, residence permits through the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior, with permanent residence possible after five consecutive years. GOV.UK’s Living in Bulgaria guide carries the steps, and one date that touches the move. A UK licence must be exchanged within a year of the residence permit; the application is in Bulgarian, it needs a medical certificate from a GP, and you hand the UK licence over. A UK State Pension keeps its annual increase in Bulgaria, and the National Social Security Institute answers whether years worked here earn a Bulgarian one.

The scooter, and the rest of what the van will not take

One question on this lane has a short answer: can a scooter travel with the boxes? It cannot. Motorbikes, cars, boats and caravans never go on the van, by arrangement or otherwise. The list of what we can’t move says so before you book, so that loading day holds no refusal. Plants, food, alcohol and pets sit on the same never list, and a plant in particular is the item people are saddest to hear about, so hear it now.

The same list names the things that go on the van but outside the cover, and the things that need a word from us first, such as an e-bike or a large power bank. Tell us about those with the inventory, and we confirm before loading day rather than at the kerb. The simplest plan is to sell the scooter before you leave. It is one less line on the inventory, and one less thing to explain at the door.

The EU’s relief draws the same line from its side: it excludes commercial vehicles and professional equipment beyond portable instruments, and keeps alcohol and tobacco out altogether. One more thing that does not travel in the van is health cover: GOV.UK notes that aftercare and rehabilitation in Bulgaria are often paid for privately, so settle it before the move rather than after. A pet travels separately under the EU’s rules for dogs, cats and ferrets, which GOV.UK links from its Bulgaria page, and arrives with you rather than with the van.

Moving to Bulgaria from the UK over the Danube: two bridges, and the range

Bulgaria is reached from the north over the river. Only two road bridges cross the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria: the Friendship Bridge between Giurgiu and Ruse, and the New Europe Bridge between Calafat and Vidin. Either way the country opens up from the river. Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna lie in different directions from it, so the city on your quote moves the hours. A Black Sea address is a long way from a Sofia one by road, and a village just over the bridge at Ruse is a short run from the river and a long one from the capital. The quote is for the two places you name, never for the capital on a mover’s behalf.

From London the tool counts 24.9 driving hours to Sofia. No size on this lane lands before day 3; your own vehicle is given 3–5 days, and a part load, which shares the van, 3–10 days. Someone asking how long the UK to Bulgaria takes gets that range at booking, then a precise time the day before loading. The one thread you book in carries the updates in between. Bookings run from 7 days before loading to 3 months ahead. When you cross yourself, the Entry/Exit System has your photo and fingerprints taken or checked at the border, as for any non-EU national. GOV.UK’s exemption rests on a new residence card, which it describes for people who moved before 2021, so once you are legally resident, ask the Migration Directorate what to carry.

Removals to Bulgaria by size, price and the calendar

Bulgaria carries 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³ on the matrix, and 2,400 kg is the 30 m³ cap. Each cap is enforced. Run past yours and say so early: the answer is the next size at its locked price, and no other change.

Booking is what locks the price, on every size. Today’s published example is £2,380 for 10 m³ between London and Sofia; your quote then confirms your own figure for the two addresses on it. 25% goes down at booking and the rest on loading day, with the published prices read on 13 October 2026. Between loading and arrival the goods sit under Goods-in-Transit cover, capped at £20,275 an event and carrying a £481 excess. The fixed price removals page spells out what may sit beside the price, and by whose hand.

Bulgaria keeps the Orthodox calendar. In 2026 its Easter runs from 10 to 13 April, with Liberation Day on 3 March, St George’s Day on 6 May, Unification Day on 6 September, Independence Day on 22 September and a Christmas break from 24 to 28 December. Tell us if your arrival lands near one. We run no collections between 16 December and 7 January, on any route.
