Moving to Slovakia from the UK: Bratislava Castle above the Danube at sunset

Moving to Slovakia: how customs works, and the documents to expect

Moving to Slovakia from the UK? The recorded drive from London to Bratislava is 15.7 hours, which puts the first delivery day at day 2 on every size; the 20 and 30 m³ are then quoted at 2–4 days and the consolidated 5 and 10 m³ loads run to day 9. Customs clearance is included in every quote. Two of the sizes book to a fixed day, which is why this page talks about lifts.

Customs clearance is included in every quote when you’re moving to Slovakia from the UK.

Moving to Slovakia from the UK, in facts

Every corridor we serve has its own facts: customs pack, transfer-time range, weight limits. We publish them rather than making you ask. These are confirmed for moving to Slovakia from the UK, because allowances differ by country.

SIZESIZE COLLECTION WINDOWWINDOW WEIGHT ALLOWANCEWEIGHT DELIVERY RANGEDELIVERY

10m³ 3-day window3-day window 600 kg 2–9 days · travels consolidated*

30m³ Confirmed dayConfirmed day 2,400 kg 2–4 days

* 5–10m³ travels consolidated with other moves, so its range is widest.

Slovakia offers 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³, the 30 m³ capped at 2,400 kg. What sets this lane apart is the booking shape: the 20 and 30 m³ take a confirmed day, the smaller three a window (2-day window on the 15 m³, 3-day window on the 10, 4-day window on the 5), and a flat with a lift booked for one morning wants the first kind. The drive is 15.7 recorded hours, the Channel crossing counted as rest, so delivery starts on day 2.

PLANNING THE MOVE

Moving to Slovakia from the UK: what to settle before the van is booked

One lift, one day: the sizes that book to a date

The thread above is the heart of this lane. A building hands you the goods lift for a single day, the housing association has fixed it, and a four-day window is no use to you. The answer is the shape of the matrix, not a favour. The two largest sizes, 20 and 30 m³, book to a confirmed day. The 15 m³ books to a two-day window, the 10 m³ to three days, the 5 m³ to four. So if the date cannot move, you want one of the two that book to a date, and we check that day is open before you commit to anything.

Weight is the other half of the choice. The 30 m³ carries 2,400 kg on this route; if your load is nearer 15 m³ but your lift is immovable, say so, and we will tell you straight which size fits the day rather than the volume. Then the inventory you finalise 3 days before loading is what the crew works from on the one morning that counts.

The smaller sizes earn their windows honestly. A 5 or 10 m³ load shares the vehicle with other moves, which is why its collection is a window of days and its delivery a range that reaches day 9; the 15 m³ sits between, with a two-day window and a shorter range. None of that is vagueness for its own sake. The width is the consolidation, and we would rather print it than promise a Tuesday we cannot keep. If your dates have slack, the smaller sizes are the economical way to Bratislava; if they have none, the fixed-day sizes exist for you.

Moving to Slovakia from the UK: three days for the police, 185 for the licence

Slovakia expects a new arrival from outside the EU to register the address with the Foreign Police department within three days of arriving. The Foreign Police, not a town hall, also issue and extend the residence documents you will need for a stay beyond a visit. A temporary residence permit follows the purpose of your stay: work, business or study, each with its own evidence.

The driving licence rule here is its own thing. You can drive on a UK licence for 185 days of residence, and you cannot start the exchange earlier. Once the 185 days are up, you have 60 days to swap it at the Regional Police Directorate, with no test, a DVLA check code and an official Slovak translation; an international driving permit does not stand in for it. Anyone moving to Slovakia from the UK who plans to drive should put that date in the diary beside the move. If you bring a car, that journey is yours: we do not carry cars.

After the card arrives: insurance, a medical report and five working days

The residence card itself comes by courier once the police text you that residence is granted, and it starts clocks of its own. Within three working days of receiving it you conclude Slovak health insurance, and within 30 days you send the Foreign Police proof of it. Within the same 30 days you also submit a medical report, no older than 30 days, confirming you carry no disease that endangers public health. From then on every important change, a new name, a new address, new passport data, is reported within five working days. Write those four deadlines on the same page as the lift day and the inventory deadline, because the month after the van leaves is busier than the month before it.

Bratislava parking: PAAS, and the lift it does not book

Bratislava regulates its street parking through PAAS, run by the city itself. A visitor pays by the hour, in one of six apps, by SMS to a short number with the section code and the plate, at a meter or through a partner shop; there are no minute tickets, and the green PAAS signs in each zone give the code and the rate. Residents buy a resident card instead. What PAAS does not offer is a reservation for a removal van, so a bay for the morning and the goods lift are two separate asks of two separate people, the city and the building. Make both before you confirm the date with us, and tell us the section code if the street has one, so the crew knows where it is allowed to stand.

Moving to Slovakia from the UK: customs is done in France, not Bratislava

Slovakia’s Financial Administration has its own pages on goods imported from outside the EU, and they put a Slovak customs office in charge of the VAT. That is not an office you deal with on this lane, because the declaration for your furniture is made in France, long before the van reaches Slovakia.

The relief on a change of residence is the EU’s, which French customs applies: twelve months living outside the EU, six months of owning and using the goods, arrival within twelve months of settling, and nothing alcoholic, nothing of tobacco and nothing commercial on the list. Lend, pledge, hire out or sell anything within twelve months of clearance and the relief on it is lost. Qualify for the duty relief and the VAT relief follows it: the declaration that clears the duty settles the VAT question in the same breath, one fewer thing to chase in Bratislava while you are finding the lift key.

What customs wants to see is the evidence. The papers listed on this page are the usual set, the signed Non-Cession Certificate, proof that you are leaving one home and proof that you are setting up another among them. We settle yours after your quote, and customs can ask for more. Our customs partner lodges the declaration in your name. Where a document is missing or carries the wrong date, we see it before the border does, which is the whole point of the seven-day deadline above.

Over the Morava on the D2: Sundays, summer Saturdays and a 2026 oddity

The van reaches Slovakia from the Czech side. After Prague and Brno the Czech D2 runs down to the border at Lanžhot, and the Slovak D2 takes over at Kúty, crossing the Morava and running through Malacky into Bratislava; the whole line is part of the pan-European corridor from Berlin to Budapest. A vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes carries the Slovak electronic vignette, and there is a one-day version for exactly this kind of trip; heavier vehicles pay the distance toll, a system that changes hands on 1 January 2027. Either way it is the driver’s cost, not a line on your quote.

Slovakia closes its motorways to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on Sundays and public holidays from midnight to 22:00, and on summer Saturdays from 07:00 to 19:00 between July and August. The calendar has a quirk this year. In 2026, 8 May and 15 September are working days by a one-off exception, and 1 September, 28 October and 17 November are state holidays on which people work. 1 and 6 January, Easter, 1 May, 5 July, 29 August, 1 November and the three days of Christmas are the real closures. If your lift day sits beside one of those, tell us when you ask for the quote.

What removals to Slovakia cost, and the two things left to you

The quote for removals to Slovakia is one figure, transport and customs clearance together, and it locks at booking. Our last reading of the matrix priced 10 m³, London to Bratislava, at £1,648; your two addresses decide your own. A lift that overruns, a toll that rises or a Sunday ban does not change it. Only you can, by needing the next size, and then it is the locked price of that size, nothing improvised, as our fixed price removals page sets out.

Two things stay yours. You arrange the building’s lift booking and the parking at each end, since only a resident can. And if customs refuses the relief, the duty or VAT is charged to you, said up front rather than found later. Cover on everything aboard is a figure in pounds, goods in transit to £20,275 per event, with the exclusions on the cover page. The person who checked your lift day is the person in your thread until the last box is upstairs. For how we handled the days that went wrong, read our MuveOne reviews page.
