Moving to Slovenia: how customs works, and the documents to expect
Moving to Slovenia from the UK? Ljubljana is the nearest of the south-eastern capitals we serve, 15.8 driving hours from London: the earliest delivery is day 2, your own vehicle runs at 2–4 days, and even the part-load 5 and 10 m³ tiers run at 2–9 days here. Customs clearance is included in every quote too. It is done in France, from the inventory you finish with us, and the papers you supply are settled for your situation after your quote.
Customs clearance is included in every quote when you’re moving to Slovenia from the UK.

The documents for moving to Slovenia from the UK
For every move
- Your passport A valid passport, as a copy.
- Insurance / Inventory List Please finish it and pass it to us 3 calendar days or more before your window for collection.
- Non-Cession Certificate The goods are yours to keep for 12 months after import: this form rules out any sale, hire, loan or gift.
Your UK home
- Proof of residency in the UK Give us the last full tax year in council bills; with no bills, UK bank statements covering 12 months.
- Proof of end of residence A sale agreement or a rental termination notice, being what ends your UK home. A home you still own and rent out calls for the tenancy agreement with your tenants, and a letting agent's agreement if an agent acts.
- Employment termination papers If your job is over, a P45 or a paper like it, if available.
Your home in Slovenia
Check your Slovenian home against these two sets.
YOUR OWN HOME THERE
- Rental agreement With a home of your own in Slovenia, recent utility bills.
- Work contract Yes, if one was issued.
OR, STAYING WITH SOMEONE
- Property owner's passport A copy of the owner's, in date.
- Proof in the owner's name Which one is up to the owner: a utility bill, rent agreement or property-ownership document in their name.
- Declaration of Providing Accommodation Your host's statement of a stay lasting 12 months or longer, signed.
Customs authorities can ask for more. What each document is, how the two stages run after your quote, what stands in when you start out with family, and what happens if customs asks for more: all on our transfer of residence page.
We tell you this now so nothing is a surprise later.
Moving to Slovenia from the UK, in facts
Every corridor we serve has its own facts: customs pack, transfer-time range, weight limits. We publish them rather than making you ask. These are confirmed for moving to Slovenia from the UK, because allowances differ by country.
* 5–10m³ travels consolidated with other moves, so its range is widest.
Because the drive is short, every range to Slovenia opens at day 2; the matrix runs 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³ here, and the 30 m³ cap is 2,400 kg. The two larger sizes book to a day rather than a window, which suits a building that lends its lift once. The quote prices the two addresses you name; a Maribor or Koper address changes little on a country this compact.

Planning your removals to Slovenia from the UK
Slovenia is small, close and orderly, and by the time the van reaches it your furniture has been through customs in France, declared from one inventory. That single list shapes how to plan the move. Get the inventory right, and the rest of the route is a short drive. The Slovenian state is precise about where you live: eight days to register, a card for the health service, a biometric permit to carry. This section goes through the list, the eight-day rule, the road, the packing question people ask on this lane, and the money.
One list, written once: the customs declaration for moving to Slovenia from the UK
Your furniture enters the EU in France, so the declaration is made there and French customs applies the relief, which is the EU’s. The Slovenian Financial Administration prints the same tests: at least twelve months living outside the EU, and goods owned or used for at least six months before moving. The load has to clear within twelve months of your move. That office’s page also describes a claim made in Slovenia: a customs declaration, proof of your year outside the EU, two written statements and a list in two copies that customs confirms and that cannot be added to afterwards, save in justified cases. Your goods are declared in France, so that paperwork is not yours to gather on this lane.
Give your inventory real care. We ask for the finalised inventory 3 calendar days before your window and the customs documents 7 days before it. In practice that means one list, written once, that serves our van and the French declaration together. For twelve months after clearance the goods must stay yours and in your own use: a sale or a loan in that time costs you the relief, and the duty falls due.
The papers on this page carry that case for you. Council bills and proof of leaving your UK home speak for your year outside the EU, and the Non-Cession Certificate puts the no-sale rule above in writing. Customs may still ask for more, including evidence of your six months of ownership. Our transfer of residence page walks through them and the cases where another document stands in.
Eight days to register, and the permit that comes first
Slovenia asks for a residence permit before it will register you as a resident. The Slovenian government’s residence page is plain about it: a foreign national holds a permanent or temporary permit, and then registers the address. The eUprava portal sets the terms: the registration goes to the administrative unit for the address, within eight days of taking up residence, for up to two years or the life of the permit if shorter; a certificate is issued only if you ask for one, and moving away means deregistering within eight days too. It is worth knowing where the unit is before you arrive. Register before you unpack: the eight days run from the day you move in.
Two more things follow from the permit rather than the move, and a third from the address. GOV.UK’s Living in Slovenia guide says a resident holds a Slovenian health insurance card alongside the biometric permit, and that the biometric permit is what spares you the Entry/Exit System’s fingerprinting at the border. A UK licence stays valid for twelve months, after which you exchange it without a test, with the embassy’s letter confirming you lived in the UK at the time of issue. The exchange takes time, so apply before the year is out. A double taxation agreement keeps the same income from being taxed twice, and a resident may vote in local elections, though not national ones. The permit’s biometric card is also the document to show when a hotel or a landlord asks who you are, because without it a passport gets stamped at the border like a visitor’s.
A two-day drive, and ranges that open on day two
Our routing tool gives London to Ljubljana 15.8 driving hours, the shortest of the five south-eastern lanes we publish. Slovenia sits inside the Schengen area, so the van meets no passport check on its way in from Austria or Italy; the customs stage is behind it by then, back in France. The ranges show that distance: nothing before day 2, your own vehicle at 2–4 days, a part load at 2–9 days. A date books up to 3 months ahead and no later than 7 days before loading, which on a lane this short is usually the tighter of the two limits.
The two larger sizes book to a day rather than a window. That matters in a Ljubljana apartment block where the building lends you the lift once. Tell us the date the building has given you, and we check it before you commit to anything. The smaller sizes take a window instead, and the window is date flexibility for the booking, not extra packing time: you have packed and are ready from its first day, you stay available throughout it, and the exact loading time comes with at least a day’s notice. If the evenings are running out, that is the packing add-on’s job, below, not the window’s.
Packing help on removals to Slovenia, and the part that stays yours
The question this lane brings up most, and the thread below shows it, is whether we can pack. We can, as an add-on priced on your job and subject to availability, so ask early rather than late. The usual split is sensible: you take the wardrobes, we take the kitchen and the things that break. We finish a packing job three calendar days before your window opens, on a separate visit, so the inventory settles before anyone loads.
Personal property, for the relief, is anything for your own or your household’s use: furniture, equipment and a bicycle alike, none of it in a quantity that looks commercial. Alcohol, tobacco, commercial transport and a trade’s own tools, portable ones excepted, sit outside the relief. We do not carry a car, trailer, caravan, motorcycle or boat, and a motor vehicle you drive there yourself still owes Slovenia’s vehicle tax where it is due.
Cover extends to what you pack yourself. Goods-in-Transit cover on this lane is the standard policy, £20,275 per event at most with a £481 excess, and it includes self-packed furniture when you wrap it to the standard on our packing guide. Label every box by room and number it on the list. Either way the inventory stays yours to sign, and on this lane it is also the list customs reads in France. A box numbered on the list and labelled on the box is the simplest insurance there is: it is how you show the signed list and the van’s load to be the same thing.
Removals to Slovenia by size, price and date
To Slovenia the matrix runs 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³, the 30 m³ held to 2,400 kg, and the 20 m³, a 7.5-tonne part load, is the size that books to your chosen day without the confirmed-day arithmetic of the 30. What you book is what you pay: £1,709 is today’s published example for 10 m³ from London to Ljubljana, and your quote fixes the number for your two addresses. The published prices were read on 13 October 2026; the quote, not the example, is the figure that binds. A pet travels under the EU’s dog, cat and ferret rules and arrives with you rather than in the van. You put down 25% at booking and the remainder on loading day; our fixed price removals page lists what sits beside the price and who can add to it.
Slovenia keeps the Western Easter, 5 and 6 April in 2026, and has work-free days on 8 February, 27 April, 1 and 2 May, 25 June, 15 August, 31 October, 1 November and 25 and 26 December, with Whit Sunday on 24 May. Tell us if your arrival falls on one. Our own collections pause from 16 December to 7 January each year.
