Moving to Sweden from the UK: the tower of Stockholm City Hall

Moving to Sweden: how customs works, and the documents to expect

Moving to Sweden from the UK? Our recorded route, London to Stockholm, is 21.8 hours of driving across Germany and Denmark and over the Øresund to Malmö, so every size is quoted from day 3: 3–10 days for a shared 5 m³ load and 3–5 days for a vehicle of your own. Customs clearance is included in every quote, and the relief from duty and VAT on the household goods the move brings is the EU's, applied by French customs.

Customs clearance is included in every quote when you’re moving to Sweden from the UK.

YOUR DOCUMENTS, INSTRUCTED

The documents for moving to Sweden from the UK

YOUR DOCUMENT PACK
UK → SWEDEN
The usual pack for a change of residence. We confirm yours after your quote.

For every move

  • Your passport A copy of yours, in date, is all.
  • Insurance / Inventory List Filled in, and sent so it arrives 3 calendar days or more before collection begins.
  • Non-Cession Certificate The goods stay with you for 12 months after import: nothing sold, hired out or given away, not a single item lent.

Your UK home

  • Proof of residency in the UK Billing from your council for the last full tax year. No bills? 12 months of UK bank statements then.
  • Proof of end of residence Your notice ending the rental, or the agreement selling the home. For a home you own and let out, we ask for the tenancy agreement signed with your tenants; any letting agent's agreement goes with it.
  • Employment termination papers A P45 or similar, if you have left a job and have it.

Your home in Sweden

Look at where you will live in Sweden, then send that set.

YOUR OWN HOME THERE

  • Rental agreement Bills from recent months, if you own the Swedish home.
  • Work contract Worth including, if you were given one.

OR, STAYING WITH SOMEONE

  • Property owner's passport The home's owner gives a valid copy.
  • Proof in the owner's name Bearing the owner's name: a rent agreement, an ownership document or a utility bill.
  • Declaration of Providing Accommodation Your host signs to say 12 months or more is agreed.

Customs authorities can ask for more. What each document is, how the two stages run after your quote, what stands in when you start out with family, and what happens if customs asks for more: all on our transfer of residence page.

Moving to Sweden from the UK, in facts

Every corridor we serve has its own facts: customs pack, transfer-time range, weight limits. We publish them rather than making you ask. These are confirmed for moving to Sweden from the UK, because allowances differ by country.

SIZESIZE COLLECTION WINDOWWINDOW WEIGHT ALLOWANCEWEIGHT DELIVERY RANGEDELIVERY

30m³ Confirmed dayConfirmed day 2,400 kg 3–5 days

* 5–10m³ travels consolidated with other moves, so its range is widest.

All five sizes run to Sweden, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 m³, and the 30 m³ keeps its full 2,400 kg allowance. Stockholm is the far end of Scandinavia's road network from London, so this is one of the longer drives we record, 21.8 hours, and no range starts before day 3; the Channel crossing counts as the driver's rest and adds nothing to it. The sizes differ in their window as much as their range: a 20 or 30 m³ vehicle loads on a day you choose, a shared load inside a window.

PLANNING THE MOVE

Moving to Sweden from the UK: Migrationsverket, Skatteverket and the Øresund crossing

Two countries and a bridge between the Channel and Stockholm

You reach Sweden by road through Germany and Denmark, and the last water on the way is the Øresund. The Øresund link is 15.9 kilometres long: a bridge, an artificial island and an immersed tunnel joining Denmark to Sweden. A van between six and nine metres long pays 832 Danish kroner at its toll station, where the fee follows the vehicle’s length. The alternative is the Rostock to Gedser ferry into Denmark, a two-hour crossing. The load and the day decide which the carrier takes. It does not change your price. The water counts as the driver’s rest, so it does not stretch your range either. London to Stockholm is 21.8 hours of driving, and no range on this route starts before day 3.

From December to March Sweden expects winter on its roads, and the law follows the season. A vehicle over 3.5 tonnes must run winter tyres on every axle, trailer included, from 10 November to 10 April, whether or not the road is white that day. A lighter van needs them from 1 December to 31 March when winter conditions exist, and the Swedish police decide on the day whether they do. A carrier working Scandinavia in winter is equipped for it. What the season changes for you is daylight at the kerb, so place a December collection early in a window rather than late.

We do not carry cars, so if you keep yours, you drive it to Sweden yourself. Before it gets Swedish plates it needs proof of customs clearance, a verification of origin from Transportstyrelsen and a registration inspection.

Removals to Sweden: the relief, the certificate you sign and the twelve-month rule

The EU lets a person moving to Sweden from outside it bring their belongings in free of duty and VAT, and French customs applies that relief, because France is where the van enters the EU. The conditions are written for a household rather than a trader. You must have had your normal residence outside the EU for at least one continuous year. The items must have belonged to you for at least six months before you leave. You or your household must have used them for six months outside the EU. You have twelve months from the day you settle in Sweden to have them declared. And for twelve months after the relief is granted you must not sell, rent out, lend, give away or pledge them, or you forfeit the relief and owe the duty and VAT.

Tullverket, Swedish Customs, describes a form for people declaring in Sweden, the declaration for relief on personal belongings when migrating to Sweden. That form is not yours to sign here, because the clearance happens in France and we handle it. What you do sign is the Non-Cession Certificate, the rule above put in writing over your name. The papers on this page cover the rest: your UK residence and its end, and your home in Sweden. Send them 7 days ahead of your window. Your final inventory has until 3 calendar days ahead. Customs authorities can ask for more, and we tell you if they do. Want belongings to reach Sweden before you? Talk to us before you book, since that takes arranging.

Alcohol and tobacco get no relief at all, and our what we can’t move page rules them out in any case.

Permit first, then the population register

Since the UK left the EU, a British citizen who wants to live in Sweden applies to Migrationsverket for a residence permit, as a citizen of any non-EU country does. The type of permit depends on what you will do there. Then comes Skatteverket. Plan to live in Sweden for a year or more? Then you register in the population register. That happens in person at a state service centre, with every family member who is moving, children included; some centres require a booked appointment.

Bring the marriage and birth certificates if you move as a family. Skatteverket’s own e-service, Flytta till Sverige, lets you fill in the notification before the visit. You bring your permit card, proof of why you are moving, such as an employment contract, and your address. You get the personal identity number, the personnummer, when Skatteverket first lists you. Staying less than a year? Then the register is closed to you, and you can apply to Skatteverket for a coordination number, if you have a connection to Sweden and can show you need one.

This order is Sweden’s own, and it runs beside the move rather than through it. Neither the permit nor the registration is a paper on this page, and the van does not wait for either. Our transfer of residence page shows how the clearance itself runs.

Your UK driving licence is exchanged for a Swedish one once you are a resident. Transportstyrelsen wants the application within a year of your registration if you are to keep driving without a gap. A UK licence holder may still apply after that year has passed.

Midsummer, winter tyres, congestion tax and the Swedish calendar

Midsummer Eve is always a Friday between 19 and 25 June, and Midsummer Day follows on the Saturday; in 2026 they fall on 19 and 20 June. It is not an official holiday, yet workplaces and shops across Sweden close for it. Treat that Friday and the Saturday after it as days when nothing moves. The official list has its own shape. Epiphany on 6 January, Good Friday and Easter Monday, 1 May and Ascension Day come first.

Then National Day on 6 June, All Saints’ Day on a Saturday at the turn of November, and Christmas. Sweden keeps Whitsunday but not Whit Monday, unlike Denmark. Christmas Eve is not official either, yet most of the country takes it. A delivery range that ends on any of these ends on the next working day. So look at the calendar before you choose your window, and ask us if a date looks tight.

Two kinds of mover will find a route of their own on Tullverket’s pages: a Swede coming home after years of work in the UK, and a student. Both are written for people declaring in Sweden, not for this lane. If either is you, tell us before you book.

Two city rules reach the van as well. Stockholm and Gothenburg charge a congestion tax that applies to foreign-registered vehicles too, invoiced through a notification partner. And a class 1 environmental zone for heavy vehicles covers Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö among others. There a lorry meeting Euro VI enters without limit, and older ones by age. Our own calendar adds the last two dates: a window up to 3 months ahead, and the festive closure, 16 December to 7 January, when nothing moves.

Moving to Sweden from the UK: the volume you guess and the price you lock

The thread on this page is about volume because that is where a Sweden move goes wrong, when it does. Almost everyone guesses their cubic metres, and a guess that is low means a bigger vehicle on the day. So we size your move from your inventory, not your instinct: list the rooms, and we tell you the size. Then the price locks, on every size at once. Every range is built on a 9-hour driving day, the tachograph’s, which is why Stockholm starts at day 3. If your list grows before the 3-day deadline, you move up to the next size at its locked price, the one you booked on.

London to Stockholm examples, read on 13 October 2026: £1,940 for 5 m³ shared, £2,326 for 10 m³, £5,232 for a 30 m³ vehicle to yourself. The deposit is 25%, and the balance is due on loading day. Goods in transit cover of £20,275 runs from loading to arrival, with a £481 excess. Those examples are Stockholm’s; a Gothenburg or Malmö door is priced from its own street, and your quote is the one that counts. The locked price is one bill: the move, the clearance work and the driver’s help at the van. The bridge toll and the fuel are the carrier’s. Weight is the other limit, 1,200 kg on a 20 m³ load and 2,400 kg on the largest. Our guide to what a van carries explains why books, not sofas, are what reach it.
