Removals to Belgium from the UK: the cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula in Brussels

Removals to Belgium from the UK

Removals to Belgium from the UK are door to door with MuveOne, and London to Brussels is the shortest drive on our matrix, 4.1 hours. Customs clearance is included in every quote; four sizes run on this route, as the table below shows, and each of their delivery ranges starts at day 1. Your document list is personal: after your quote we go through your situation and instruct the exact pack, not a generic checklist.

Customs clearance is included in every quote for removals to Belgium.

Removals from the UK to Belgium, in facts

Every corridor we serve has its own facts: customs pack, transfer-time range, weight limits. We publish them rather than making you ask. These are confirmed for removals from the UK to Belgium, because allowances differ by country.

SIZESIZE COLLECTION WINDOWWINDOW WEIGHT ALLOWANCEWEIGHT DELIVERY RANGEDELIVERY
5m³ 4-day window4-day window 300 kg 1–8 days · travels consolidated*
10m³ 3-day window3-day window 600 kg 1–8 days · travels consolidated*
15m³ 2-day window2-day window 900 kg 1–6 days
30m³ Confirmed dayConfirmed day 1,800 kg 1–3 days

* 5–10m³ travels consolidated with other moves, so its range is widest.

Belgium is one of the routes where our matrix offers four sizes rather than five: 5, 10 and 15 m³, then a 30 m³ van capped at 1,800 kg, the lower of the two countries' limits. The recorded drive from London to Brussels is 4.1 hours, and the Channel crossing sits outside that figure as the driver's rest, so each range starts at day 1. A shared 5 or 10 m³ load may take until day 8, because it waits for the moves it travels with; a dedicated 30 m³ van is quoted at 1–3 days. Past your weight cap, the next size costs its locked difference, nothing more, as how to pack for moving house explains.

PLANNING THE MOVE

Planning removals to Belgium: the shortest drive we record, and what still takes time

Brussels is 4.1 hours from London by road, so removals to Belgium feel as if they should be simple. Much of the move is. What takes time on this route is not the driving but three other things. Belgium wants paper from a new resident, the capital’s streets have rules, and a shared load is planned into a run. Here they are in the order you will meet them.

Four sizes, not five, and a lower cap on the biggest van

Our matrix offers four sizes to Belgium: 5, 10 and 15 m³, then 30 m³. There is no 20 m³ step on this route. A home that outgrows 15 m³ therefore books the 30 m³ van. Its allowance here is 1,800 kg, less than the same van carries on routes with the full cap. The reason is a rule we apply everywhere. A size runs only where both countries allow it, and the weight cap is the lower of the two. For a three-bedroom house with a full kitchen, that cap is worth a look before you book. Our guide, how much does a sofa weigh, shows what the heavy pieces add up to.

The price itself does not move once you book, whichever of the four you choose. Take a 10 m³ shared load, London to Brussels, at £1,071, or the 30 m³ van at £2,169: customs clearance sits inside both figures. You pay a 25% deposit to lock the window, then the balance on loading day. If your packing runs past the cap, we charge the locked difference to the next size and nothing on top. Our fixed price removals page sets the rule out.

Removals to Belgium clear in France: the EU relief and the commune visit

Your goods clear French customs on the way to Belgium, under the EU-wide relief for a household arriving from the UK. They enter free of duty and VAT on three conditions. You lived outside the EU for twelve months in a row. You used each item for six months or more. Everything arrives within a year of settling. The undertaking not to sell, lend or hire out those goods for a year is the Non-Cession Certificate named above. In other words, the certificate is not an extra formality; it is the condition of the relief itself.

Outside the relief sit alcohol and tobacco, commercial vehicles and the tools of a trade, so a case of wine or a work van is declared and taxed on its own, and it is worth naming either when you quote.

What is particular to Belgium is the commune. A new resident reports to the town hall of their commune within eight working days of arriving. A stay of more than three months then goes through its Foreigners’ Office, by appointment. Soon after, a police officer calls at the address to confirm you live there, so a name on the doorbell helps.

The Belgian Embassy in London tells Belgians moving back from the UK that their town hall can issue a document declaring the transfer of residence, which may be needed for personal goods. On a move with us you do not need one. Your goods clear French customs, so the commune visit is for your registration and plays no part in your customs pack. We instruct your exact pack after your quote, as our transfer of residence page describes. Your papers are due 7 days ahead of the window, your finished inventory 3 calendar days ahead.

Dunkirk or Calais: why a short drive still comes with a collection window

The van reaches Belgium by the short Channel crossings. Dover to Dunkirk takes from two hours, with up to 22 sailings a day. Dover to Calais takes around 90 minutes, and Dunkirk is a short run from the Belgian border. A crossing is rest for the driver rather than driving, so each range here begins on day 1; the ranges themselves are built on a tachograph day of 9 driving hours.

Once in Belgium, a goods vehicle over 3.5 tonnes pays a kilometre charge on the roads of Flanders and Brussels and on the Walloon motorways, so our 30 m³ van carries the on-board unit that meters it, and that cost sits inside your price, with new rates due on 1 January 2027.

This lane’s thread, below, asks the question we hear most on it. Why does a 4.1-hour drive still come with a collection window of several days? The honest answer is that the window is not about the driving. It is how we plan a shared 5 or 10 m³ load into a run with other moves. That planning is what keeps a part load affordable.

The range for a shared load therefore runs to day 8, while a dedicated 30 m³ van is quoted at 1–3 days. If you need a particular day, say so before you book: a dedicated van can be arranged for it. Whatever you choose, you hear the loading day inside the window, with 24 hours’ notice at the least. Should your keys move, you can ask to reschedule from your move page.

Brussels streets: the low-emission zone and the no-parking signs

The Brussels-Capital Region is one low-emission zone across all 19 communes, and it covers vans registered abroad as much as Belgian ones. Only the ring road and a few roads leading to transit car parks sit outside it. A diesel van must meet at least Euro 6 to enter. From 1 January 2026 the zone bars Euro 5 diesels too, and the fine is €350. A first offence from that date brings a warning letter, a fine can follow three months on, and from 1 July 2026 one fine may cover a whole year. We choose the partner’s vehicle for the route, so this is our problem to solve, not yours. Still, it explains why a removal van in Brussels is never just any van.

Parking is the part that does involve you. The City of Brussels rents no-parking signs for a move, places them and takes them away, at €114.03 for the first day and €14.87 for each day after. In a pedestrian zone no signs go up at all, and you request a pass instead. However, it asks for the request at least ten working days ahead. The Region’s permit to occupy the road, applied for through its Osiris platform, must come first. Other communes run their own versions with their own notice periods. The driver’s help is at the van, loading and unloading at the kerb. For a townhouse on four floors, or a street where the van must stop some way off, ask for additional crew when you quote. Its price comes from your inventory, and it depends on availability on your date.

A house-hunting trip before removals to Belgium

Many people cross once before the move, to sign the lease and see the street. Belgium counts that trip too. A citizen of a non-EU country who stays under three months somewhere other than a hotel declares the stay at the commune within three working days of entering. On the move itself, the commune lists you in a provisional register until the police visit confirms the address, and only then does the full registration stand. The ten legal holidays, fixed by a law of 1974, close the same desk, so a trip that lands on 21 July or 15 August signs no paper that day. Plan the viewing week around both.

After removals from the UK to Belgium: the mutuelle, the licence, the roads beyond Brussels

Belgium asks three more things of a new resident, and the British government’s guidance for people living there sets them out. You register with a health insurance fund, a mutuelle or ziekenfonds, because that is how Belgian healthcare is reached. You exchange a UK driving licence for a Belgian one to keep driving after 185 days. And you register your residency, which is the commune visit above. None of them stops the van, but the first two need the same proofs of address, so keep the lease and the registration paper together.

The roads matter where the delivery is not in Brussels. Antwerp and Ghent run low-emission zones of their own under Flemish rules, which differ from the capital’s. The zone admits a vehicle registered abroad once that vehicle registers with it, Dutch plates excepted, and the Flemish government decided in November 2025 to withdraw every planned tightening, so the current conditions stand. Ghent’s rule reads the same way, with its own online registration for a foreign plate.

Our partner handles that registration for the van. A delivery in Wallonia meets no zone at all today. Whatever the region, the driver’s help stays at the van, and a tall townhouse or a flat above a shop in Antwerp is the case for additional crew.

Public holidays in Belgium, and when removals pause on our side

Belgium keeps ten legal public holidays. The ones that touch a summer move are 21 July, the national day, and 15 August. Ascension Thursday, Whit Monday and Easter Monday come earlier in the year, then 1 and 11 November in the autumn. On those days the town hall is shut, which affects the registration above as much as the van.

Our own calendar closes for collections over the festive period, 16 December to 7 January, and opens 3 months ahead at the most. Book early for a July move, therefore. If your Belgian address is ready later than your UK one, storage through our removals and storage service can bridge the gap. Transit cover of up to £20,275 an event runs from loading to arrival, with an excess of £481 and its exclusions on our goods in transit insurance for removals page. And the thread that answers that question stays open the whole way, read Mon to Sat, 8am to 10pm UK time.
